I just walked out of an interview.

I moved states a few months ago and started looking for a job shortly thereafter. Usual bullshit, over qualified, position closes then opens a week later then closes again, blah blah blah. I got an interview for a solar company, that advertises $30/hr PLUS commission. Called an appointment setter. Fuck it, I’ll apply. Immediately I get a request for an interview. I show up and the guy meeting me wants to clarify before I even walk in, that it’s 30/hr OR commission and it’s a door to door position. Big red flag number 1. I go into the room and there are a dozen other people. Big red flag number 2.

He does an intro and goes into how pay gets broken out, all of it obviously designed to close the deal, specifically pointing out that we get ONE week of a grace period in case we don’t hit our numbers, and then after the first month it’s ONLY commission.

HUGE red flag number three.

He breaks out into 1:1 interviews and takes forever, 6 of the 12 lose patience and leave. I hold out because I have nothing else to do and I’m hoping against hope the 1:1 isn’t as bad. That’s on me. My mistake.

I finally get in the room and ask why it took so long, and he said normally there are two people at a time for these interviews but the other guy had car troubles. But this is how the company wants it. I asked if that was typical to weed people out by making them wait and wait, it’s very unprofessional to make people wait over an hour. He tried to explain that if he did one on ones, he’d be there every day. I told him that it would be preferable to wasting time, he’s showing these applicants that they don’t matter to him.

When he got to the point of showing 112 doors knocked to one sale, I finally had it and gave up.

And then I got locked in! Super fun.

I’m so tired of this. I had a podcast that was picking up steam, I was close to getting it monetized and being able to do research and teach fun weird history for a living. Then my cohost’s life fell apart so it’s dead in the water until I find a new cohost. And I don’t know anyone here so that makes it more difficult. I just want to make people laugh and teach weird history.

Anyway. I knew this was the one space I could vent and not get shit about not trying hard enough.
