I recently left what many people would consider a “dream” career in a cool role for a storied institution because I made no money and felt bored, and I transitioned over into tech. In my new role, my boss has been frustrated that I'm not enough of a “self-starter” and he's right. I don't really want to be there, and it shows in my work. I have none of the new-job motivation I've had in my first few weeks at other roles.
The problem is, there is no work I would WANT to do. There's no dream role I'm missing out on – I tried it and it wasn't for me. I have hobbies I love, but I have no desire to monetize them. I want a job where I can punch in, do what I'm told, punch out, and then get on with my life. Ideally with enough flexibility to pursue the things I actually enjoy in my off time, but with enough income to support my life in a HCOL.
Is this just way too demanding a desire on my part? Should I be looking into other areas of work I might be passionate about, or is work under capitalism always joyless and draining and I need to simply accept this if I'm paying my bills?
Has anyone had a job they liked, that they could actually live on? Looking for ideas. Lol.
