How do I deal with a boss that wants nothing to do with me as a person?

This could just be me with a chip on my shoulder so please take this with a grain of salt. I've been working here for about a year and a half. I like it, but it could be better. no big deal. I was forced to use all of my Vacation time because I caught Covid and would've been out a week of pay if I hadn't gone in (everyone in my office can WFH except for me, this is due to machines that I use for my job). But recently he's been on a power trip since he got promoted due to our Project manager unfortunately passing away. This took him out of his manager role and into a new one, yet the company won't and doesn't think we need a manager for our dept. because they're cheap (learned they use 38% of the company's budget to pay employees).…

Fast forward a couple of months and he sees me visibly upset, shaking and trembling. My grandmother fell due to lack of oxygen and she is the most important person in my life. I told him my grandma fell and he said “aw” and when I went to add another detail he stopped me and said “I don't want to know anything going on in your life outside of work. Outside problems get left outside, when you come to work your demeanor needs to change and you need to focus on your job”. This baffled me, I looked at him crazy and he told me to clean myself up and take a breather then get back to it.

It makes it EXTREMELY difficult to call out for any reason because it just pisses him off when I give a reason for it. He used to be cool with it and would even sympathize but he's gone from a “Get your health checked first, health is always a priority.” to a “Ok” and i'm not sure what i've done.

I've assumed it was the added stress due to his new promotion but he seems to be doing everything he normally did, just in his own office now. I'm waiting to hear back about a new job and i'm currently applying but it was still crazy to me to see someone who could not care less about their employees lives outside of work. In the mean time, how do I deal with someone who doesn't care about me as a person? If I just tell him I won't be in, it'll piss him off. But if I explain it to him, he won't care. So should I even attempt to explain/justify me calling off?
