If a coworker is out and you’re expected to do their job on top of yours, should you be compensated for this or does it vary by company?

Anytime my coworker is out I’m expected to do her job which gives me twice the work. This week she’s been out the whole week. I do need to add that I love where I work, I can handle the second load of work and this is the highest paying place for me in my area. With the exception of this one thing my employers are nothing like any of the posts I see on here nor anyone I’ve worked for in the past. I just don’t know if it’s appropriate to ask for extra compensation for the extra responsibilities and I’m scared to put a riff in my job, as I love my employer and they love me as well.
