My employer cued me in on the topic of this meeting tomorrow and I’m not ok with it.
I work for a small business. Before I start, yes, I know this workplace is toxic. It’s just secure and I have a family to think about.
So I (28f) and my coworker “Joe” (21m) are the only employees at our office (besides the owners and their son) on salary instead of hourly pay. Our biggest “perk” to that is it basically means unlimited PTO, because our salary is our salary…it’s guaranteed that every week.
Now I personally am a pushover. I wanted to be “indispensable” so I made myself always available…..they call me at 10 pm my day off, I’m hopping on my computer. I hate now that I did this, but I dug my own grave there.
Joe, however, is better than I am. He says “his salary is for 40 hours so that’s what he’ll work”. If he stays late on Monday, he’s leaving that much earlier on Tuesday, doesn’t answer the phone on his off days, etc. basically Joe is who I wish I was.
My boss called me this morning (we’re closed today), and happened to tell me that they’re having a meeting with Joe tomorrow, and if he can’t give them the “commitment they’re looking for”, he’ll be back to hourly and his hours will drop below 40.
I feel like Joe is right here. I feel like we’re paid for 40 hours a week, and ideally, that’s all were “committed” to. What do you think?
