(people with sales experience) is it normal to charge for rebates?

i know this doesn’t technically belong here but im posting in work related areas hoping someone can provide insight on this bc i hate arguing with my boss over this and i just don’t have enough experience to know. so i’ve been going back and forth with my boss(sales manager) about this issue for a while now. the product that we sell has a manufacturer issued rebate that changes every month. he always gives the customer the sale price, then has me check for rebates and call the customer to tell them there’s a rebate and then add that money to their price. i don’t fking understand how that makes sense? a rebate is supposed to be a “discount” kinda no? so if we are charging them for it, they’re just breaking even. i’ve always found this to be a shady scam and i “forget” to do it i am…

i am being told to do this right now but i genuinely feel so stupid telling a customer i’m adding this to their price. before i go in my bosses office and tell him i won’t be doing it, is this a common practice? and i’m just being a goody two shoes? or is this genuinely shady/scammy?

more insight if my post doesn’t make much sense, at work and typing fast lol
so for example, he tells customer the price is $54,740 and then i have to go look at the rebate sheet and its anywhere from $250-500 for the customer and then there’s usually a salesman bonus of 250-1,000. i have to tell customer price is now $55,240 due to rebate. customer only gets the rebate from the manufacturer after we register for warranty. so customer only breaks even since they essentially paid for this rebate.
