My boss is asking me for a resignation letter and I’m not sure why.

Hi all. I quit my job today and my manager was asking me for a resignation letter to be sent to his email by a certain time today (the end of my shift), then asked again later once I didn’t send anything. I don’t feel like doing that. But I would like to know, there must be a reason he’s asking (besides having a written record)- why is that? Is it something in my best interest to oblige to, or could it be used against me? To give some context, I have a good relationship with my boss (yes your manager is never your friend I get it blah blah blah), I mention this because I don’t believe he would deliberately push for it unless he had to. Please advise.
