I work for a pretty giant company. I have been in a few different facilities/buildings up to now. My current building has only been functioning as is for 1 and a half years. It’s pandemic related but there were other projects the team was working toward for the future. We have somewhere between 150-250 employees in our building, and there’s another building on the other side of the US and one in the UK. We’ve felt unstable for the last 6ish months.
Work has dried up somewhat but we were told repeatedly about these ‘other projects’ happening that should be approved soon. (I’m purposely being vague btw). Don’t worry they said – many times over the last 6-8 months.
Wednesday we went to a routine meeting just to be met with a 3 minute pre-recorded video of one of the overall project leaders telling us that they’re closing our buildings and we’d receive an email within 30 minutes informing us our last day.
They said the earliest our last days would be is the 31st and proceeded to cut 90% of the staff on the 31st. So I get to now compete with anywhere from 30-150 or even more people for internal transfer positions over the next few weeks.
I will grudgingly admit they are giving severance and a 60 day job search period prior to the severance but they did not handle this well – at all.
Associates were working on setting up new software and bringing in new inventory for the projects just Tuesday afternoon!
4.5 years and I will lose my job unless I step on all my old coworkers fingers and toes scrambling to steal jobs from under all of them – to keep my benefits and all my tenure.
This job market will not give me an external job making the hourly rate I was making off the street – it took me 4 years to get to the wage I was at!
Very disheartening. I guess I don’t know the point of this post – thanks for listening to my rant I guess. Things are much worse for many other people out there.
