I'm seeking a little bit of advice as I've received a job offer, subject to DBS check and satisfactory references for a role within a school.
However, my current employer (social care sector) is refusing to give a reference unless I hand in a written four week notice. Can they do this ?
My major concern is that for whatever reason this new job falls through (relatively common in this sector) or if my DBS takes months to come back (again not entirely uncommon), that I will essentially be left without employment for an extended period if I have given notice with my current employer.
