Got fired for being late so many times, yet I still receive my 3 month bonus as I was employed for 3 1/2 months..

I received an email this morning saying the company tried to charge me a “direct debit” for the bonus I received. I don’t keep money in my checking therefor it didn’t go through. Is this legal? Or has anyone experienced this?
