When I was younger, I worked landscaping for 6 or 7 years. One thing that was consistent across the few companies I worked for was guys bragging about working 12 hour days. Or sun up to sun down depending on the time of year. 60+ hour weeks some weeks. Joking around 40 hours a week is a “part-time job”
It's was just sad to see so many people who seem to think their whole self-worth revolves around the amount of time they spend at work every week. A lot of the time, they were people with drug or alcohol problems who would get out of work and drink heavily the little time they had off until it was time to go back because how else are you supposed to tolerate that kind of existence. Opiates were another big problem in that field. Especially during mandatory 16-24+ hour shifts during bad snow storms.
I would catch shit constantly from these kinds of guys for not wanting to work more than 45 hours every week. I'm sorry that you're happy with life being work, but I'm not. I'm not willing to give up my relationships with the people in my life so I can work 10-12 hour days, 6 days a week, so that by the time my weekend rolls around my body is so run down from a week of excessive labor that I don't want to do anything.
How do we convince these kinds of people that these companies don't care for you and you shouldn't be throwing away years of your life for places that don't give a shit about you. It's just such a sad way to watch people live.
