Can you get fired for having two jobs at competing companies?

Hello, I'm 22f and a long time reader but this is my first post. Firstly, I'd like to say that I've worked fast food/ food service my whole 7 years of working. Please forgive me if this post gleams with ignorance. I currently work for a pretty big fast food chain and I've seen at least five people get fired for getting a second job at literally any other burger-fry joint as well as insert current place. I live in the states and I'm wondering if they can actually do that especially since nobody signed any document stating this wasn't allowed and was never mentioned in the interview. I'd like to know because I need a second job and as much as I'd love to do something other than customer service or fast food, I don't have experience with any other job type.
