Our team was a support team for all applications being created and bought for the company. We trained, installed, tested, documented, built the sw packages, and other support roles. No one wants to pay for testing, documentation, training, etc and our services were not cheap. When tasks became project based, we kind of lost all of our funding and had a much more limited role in new projects. Upper management looked at our team and cost, and brought in a manager who specialized in breaking up teams. She was a really nice person and really tried to find a way to get rid of our roles, but the bottom line was; support was needed for the applications being rolled out to the plant. Anytime we actually were removed from all aspects of a team, the team realized quickly they had no one who could do what we did and what we did was critical in rollouts.
They finally brought in an Indian manager and tried moving most of the tasks to India. The 1 year plan turned into a 5 year plan, which has turned into a 10 year plan or beyond. I was one of the last 10 people standing when I found a new team to transfer to. The team still has about 50% of the heads it had in the US, and we probably have more than we had including the Indian team.
