What exactly can former employers say in reference checks?

I just had a recruiter tell me that he would be asking them if I’m “nice to work with”. My references are all good and I’m not even a little concerned, but I’m fairly certain this isn’t a question employers can answer. Aren’t there protections around what employers can say? I see these sorts of things mentioned from time to time but when I expressed concern to the recruiter about them asking questions that are protected information, he dismissed it and said that anything not under an NDA could be asked about. Tbh I expect I might’ve just lost the job opportunity too because it sounds shady af. But my references really are good, I just don’t like the idea of people in my business more than they need to be.
