On mobile, English IS first language, blah blah blah
TL;DR at the bottom. Ended up ranting a bit more than I meant to.
As a preface to this story, I don't really have any complaints about the company I currently work for, just my manager. Actually, my only problem with them is that they let the manager do whatever he wants.
The department I currently work in has 3 people in it, myself included, after our fourth person quit at the end of January. After hearing about this, I decided to let my manager know in advance that I was actively looking for another job and he should really look into hiring more people for our department. He said okay then and things kept going as they were; I never heard anything about looking for new hires.
Someone in another department filed a complaint to OHS (Alberta, Canada) and they had to send someone down to inspect. One of the things mentioned by the OHS rep was that we didn't have anyone trained in first aid, especially not on the night shift with only 2 people working alone. Immediately they signed up a couple people in other departments for the first aid course, as well as my entire department, as we were the only ones that worked the night shift (remember those 2 people working alone?).
The first aid class was to take place over 2 non-consecutive, non-scheduled work days, but I would be flying out of province on one of them and therefore couldn't make the class. My manager made a call and got me into another class, happening in mid February. I reminded him that I was still looking for other work and asked if he was sure about signing me up for the class, but he insisted.
In comes the training days, which were during 2 of my normally scheduled work days (still got paid for it at least). I got a phone call during the second day of the class, asking if I was available for an interview the next day, which I agreed to. Finished the training, wrote the exam, got my certificate.
The next day I went to the interview and it went great. They offered me a job, matching my current wage with better benefits, a PPE allowance (steel toes and prescription safety glasses), a pay raise after my 90 days, and an apprenticeship to go with it if they like my work. Of course I accepted, on the condition that I start in April, so as to train a replacement at my current job, but really I'm going on vacation to see family across the country in the last week of March. They agreed and set my official start date with them as April 3rd.
Tuesday morning (since Monday was a holiday), I let my manager know about me accepting a new job offer. He seemed indifferent at the time, so I just went back to work.
This week, I'm on night shift so I don't even see my manager. I found out through a coworker that the manager was desperate to find a way to make me pay back the cost of the first aid training. You see, most people here have signed some kind of contract to help prevent stuff like this (no idea on legality, but not important for this story). The original role I was hired for was a kind of experiment to try and boost production of a specific product, so they never bothered to make me sign anything. Experiment fell through and I got lumped in with the rest of the people in my department, but they never thought to get me to sign anything still.
I heard he spent most of his work day today trying to find my contract, but then at the end realized that he didn't give me one. Now he's in trouble with the owners for making me do the first aid training, which cost them money, even though he was told I was about to leave.
Oh well, I get to go to my new job with fresh first aid training at least.
TL;DR: Told manager I was looking for new work, he still signed me up for first aid training. Accepted an offer at a new job. Manager tried his best to get me to pay for the training.
