I was tasked with hiring an overseas assistant. Something feels wrong. Throwaway account in case this is just as wrong as it feels. I (29f) work for an independently owned franchise. I’ve been with them for 5 years, and I love the business and what it stands for, but not the biggest fan of my employers themselves (but really who is?). My employer tasked me with hiring one overseas virtual assistant in the Philippines to make phone calls and other tasks, and if I am able to do so, I was promised a 5k per year raise. He got me in contact with another franchise doing this, and the owner of the franchise didn’t know anything about how they manage it, how they run it, etc., and basically gave me the run around that if an employee worked remotely down the road it’s the same thing.

He said he gets an invoice from them every month and pays them that way, the tasks get done, and that’s it.

He sent me the website used for job posting…in all the training information I’ve looked into, I’m not required to send w2s, 1099s, or any paperwork. I just click a button to send an offer with a salary amount and they’re good to go immediately. Feels not legal.

The website didn’t even have me verify my business, just had me input my employers credit card information (with their permission of course) and gave me a green “verified” check next to our posting. Feels like I’m scamming someone, even if I work for a legitimate company.

My boss will NOT help me figure out how I’m supposed to train or manage them. I have to figure it out for myself. They’ll be taking the majority of “my job” so I can “focus on higher level management tasks like creating a CRM”. Feels like a red flag for my job security there.

I don’t feel qualified for this and I can’t shake the feeling like I’m doing something wrong. I’m looking at hundreds of resumes and cover letters that have listed experience far above the pay grade listed.

Why does every part of me feel like this isn’t ok?

Has anyone here had any similar situation? I could use any advice or peace of mind if this really is just a normal thing.
