I was at my job for almost 3 years, and there were a lot of things about the job that turned me off. For one, it’s an apartment rental company that raises prices a lot. They hold events for tenants and spend a LOT of money on them. They give us random gift cards and have a very expensive Christmas party every year (I won a Yeti cooler) – but they’re afraid of employees talking about their wages and forbid it. Why? Because it takes away the bargaining power of the employees which is unlawful. They can more than afford to pay their employees more, but they’re more concerned about lining their own pockets and keeping up with appearances.
I posted my wage on social media after quitting with an article explaining why it’s unlawful for employers to forbid talking about wage. I just checked my personal email, and the VP of the company emailed my personal email A WEEK after I left. I didn’t read all of it because it was so freaking long, but I caught snippets. I had emailed them from my work email, resigning effective immediately and left all of my stuff on my desk, wanting a clean break.
This woman had the audacity to email my work email, CC the other managers, and then when she sent it, my ex-direct manager told her to send it to my personal email. I was flabbergasted! I could not believe that after a week, she emailed me just to tell me everything I did wrong and even said “next time you should…” as if there even will be a next time, and I am disgusted that she actually believes she holds that much power over me still. This was the nail in the coffin proving I made the right choice.
She ended the email by saying I was immature for posting my wage on Facebook, but she desperately needed to send me a long winded email “threatening” to forward my resignation email to my ex coworkers and name call.
She clearly just needed to get it all off her chest, but I didn’t respond and I deleted it.
When I said I was done, I meant it.
