“There’s nothing I can do”

Had a really crappy corporate tech support job for almost 2 years at this specific company. When I initially started (my second week on the job) I had an unfortunate incident where my girlfriend at the time was shot in a shooting at her workplace. If anyone was curious, she is ok now, she was very fortunate to have a non fatal injury and has made a full recovery since. As soon as I got the news, I left for the hospital, and took only 2 days off after to be with her, because I felt bad for taking off more since I only just started (stupid of me, right?). When I returned to work, after I had received condolences from my co-workers, I asked my boss if I was going to be payed for my time off, in which he promised I would be compensated.

After getting my check and noticing it wasn't the full amount the following week, I confronted my boss and he said he would look into it, about a week or so, I followed up with him again and finally he gave me the bullshit answer that I was on “probation” or similarly, not having enough time accrued to take the time off that I did. When talking to the Director of my department, he pulled out an old rulebook from 1999 (this was in 2021) stating that since I did not have the time accrued to get payed for my time off. I also went to the person in charge of payroll for my department in which she told me “I'm sorry about your girlfriend getting shot, but you do not have enough time saved up”. My boss explained “There's nothing I can do” after I exhausted all options.

Later in the year, I found my current job, essentially a dream job with amazing benefits and work/life balance, and moved to once of the best cities in the world, I moved out of my parents place and live on my own. I told my old employer once I got the offer here that I could only finish out the week, and would not give my 2 weeks notice (It was Wednesday, so I only really gave them 2 days notice). When asked why I couldn't give my full 2 weeks, I told them “I need to take care of some personal circumstances outside of work, there's nothing I can do” 😉
