Can I just say how dumb it is that I have to pay back my employer for their payroll mistake?

I just filed for unemployment because I got laid off on Monday. Then in an email with very little information, my previous employer tells me that they over-payed me more than $3,000 while I worked for them. $3,000!!!!!! They were giving me back pay for working while I was getting a new licensure, so when I saw extra money in my paystubs I thought it was just a part of the back pay. The worst part about all of this is that I doubt they would have realized it if I hadn’t filed for unemployment. How fucked up is that? I know this is just a low point and things will get better. I just needed to vent and have people listen. Edit: to clarify, I’m speaking of the job before the one I just got laid off from.
