The last post about tipping had some egregious comments and was obviously created and commented on by people not in the industry. Here are my thoughts: stop eating at chain restaurants, or call for them to end tipping practices and pay a percentage-based rate to their servers/bartenders (even the back-of-house should make a percentage rate of sales, but that’s another post). Those places can afford to pay their staff more. But from someone who has worked at small or family-owned businesses, both managing and tending, they are not able to match what I make reasonably.
Call for better healthcare policies, so that small business owners, artists, and service industry workers can actually afford good healthcare.
Giving a flat rate doesn’t make sense, someone working a slow Monday morning shouldn’t make as much as someone working a busy Friday night.
And for all of you saying it is not a real job, or that it’s for college-kids, you are uninformed and shouldn’t be on this sub. I have worked at places run by kids, it’s not safe, and older people with experience should absolutely be working there and paid a wage. For all of you complaining that you should have to tip for getting a beer handed to you, are you dense? You think that is all we do? We set it all up and break it all down, work nights, holidays, and weekends so that you all have a place to gather and have a good time. We prevent idiots from drinking out of control and becoming violent, groping, and killing someone on their way home. We deal with the lonely alcoholics that only get out when they come to our bar. We provide a place where societal rejects can come and have someone that knows their name and asks them how they’re doing. We provide a place for artists to share their work and be paid for it.
Abolish corporate chains and support your local places, and pay for the service you are given, and not only the service you SEE but for all the other work we’re doing for your enjoyment.
