Genuinely curious: are off-site work trips mandatory? Am I in the right to decline?

My company schedules around 1-2 off site trips per year that require travel. The MO is generally for us to gather as a group, there’s a short presentation, and then you get 1-2 more days to do whatever you want in the places we go. The owner rents some air bnbs, groups of people bunk up in shared rooms, and there’s a good amount of drinking involved. Leading up to the event the emails sharing the info are strongly worded that they’re mandatory to attend. My question to you all – am I within my right to decline to go? I honestly do not like traveling, nor do I enjoy the entire idea of having to share a house with my co workers.
