Was promoted to assistant manager today and they offered $14/hr, which is $2 more than I made as a supervisor. However, I'm female and the man that worked the same position directly before me as early as last week was hired at $15.50 only 10 months ago. He also just turned 21, whereas I'm 30 years old and have been working towards this a long time, although I know that doesn't really matter.
The other assistant manager at my store is female and 22. She was hired 2 months AFTER he was, but she made $.50 LESS than him up until he quit (they gave her a $.50 raise after he quit and they were thinking of promoting me).
TLDR; the man that quit started 10 months ago at $15.50, the female assistant manager who still works with me was hired 8 months ago at $15.00/hr, and I was hired as supervisor 6 months ago at $12/hr. Was promoted to assistant manager today and they offered $14.00/hr. WHY?
My question is, how fucked up is this? Is it unethical? How often does thus happen? The only reason I can think of for this is that I'm being promoted from within the company whereas he was not. Still feels horrible though.
What action should I take to approach this with my company?
Edit just BTW the average for a restaurant supervisor is between $14-18 where I live. The company I work for pays less for AMs, supervisors and team members but lets all of them divide tips amongst themselves equally, which generally ends up to be around $3/hr. Pretty fucked up practice. If they would just pay a normal wage AND have the tips, we'd (GOD FORBID) have an actual living wage!!
