In my experience, teacher’s unions…. pressure you to do activities outside of work hours, pressure you to donate to fundraisers, make sure you’re following the rules (act as a supervisor when they’re not), but they can’t get a hearing for untenured teachers, and don’t fight for larger educational issues. It seems their purpose is only to “represent” you if you’re in trouble (sit there in the meeting, they aren’t lawyers). So what’s the point? Hypothetically, could some teachers form a different union that is more effective in getting us more money and less work?
