I Rejected a Role After Being Disrespected by the Company

This is essentially a follow up post to one I made the other day regarding a job that had been changing the rules on me as we went along. I’d been interviewing for six weeks and expecting an offer towards the end. The first three interviews were spaced about a week apart and by all accounts went well. Hiring manager seemed to like me, recruiter had great feedback from the company. I was told a couple days after my last interview that I would hear back on feedback and possible next steps. Except that never came. Hiring manager was almost two weeks behind on following up. Radio silence. Last week I had to urge my recruiter to contact him and HR to get an update.

His excuse was that he was busy and it just got away from him. Goes in to tell me recruiter to tell me they have other candidates they are in the early stages of screening and I’d hear back by this coming Wednesday.

Come this week I’m pressing my recruiter to get updates and directions on our next steps from this company. Only HR is really responding to him. He’s calling, texting, emailing the hiring manager and barely getting a response.

What I hear this week is two things. First, the company is considering making the role a contract to hire after probationary period instead of a direct hire; which is what the job was listed as. Then I hear today that they still really like me and are thinking I’d be a better fit at the Cleveland plant instead of the regional one I applied to.

Keep in mind this. At the regional plant, they do a four day work week. Only they do. Main campus does not. Also the pay grade may be different at main campus. So my six figure job might get knocked down a few pegs because of the location.

they never clearly communicated this with me and I only learned these little bits of info after hounding my recruiter to get answers. I told him today that this company had to give me clear and direct next steps by end of business today or I would pull my application. Hiring manager was out because of the four day work week. I called him myself and he “promised” to call me Monday. I wasn’t happy about that. HR says their hands are tied until he’s in to speak.

Well, too little too late. They had weeks to make a decision and communicate these proposed changes to the role and did a piss poor job.

Email them at 2:30 and informed my recruiter I was pulling my app and I was no longer interested in the company. Reasons given were
– changing from direct hire to contract to hire without notifying me
– proposing to move me to another plant with an hour long commute without notifying me
– being weeks late providing feedback and next steps
– lack of professional courtesy and respect for me

All HR had to say was “we appreciate your feedback and apologize the process was not more favorable”.

Fuck right off

No job is worth more than my self respect and integrity. They lied to and mislead me. Even though they wanted me for these roles, I wouldn’t accept. I hope the hiring manager gets chastised on Monday for fumbling this.
