Asked to take a competency test after first interview

I interviewed for an automation engineer role today. Interview went well; 40 minutes over schedule. I brought my laptop for the first time and showed the two managers my previous work in writing programs for automation and HMI panels. They seemed impressed and liked to see it. I’m still a bit of a rookie in this field in some ways, however I am self taught and producing good quality, usable results. I asked about our next steps and they said if I came back I’d meet with some more people. Seems normal enough. They then mentioned in the week between now and possible follow up, I’d be sent an online test… I believe it’s a competency test or basic engineering skills test. I forgot after they said it. But now I’m wondering if I even want to go through the motions. Ive been having an awful time getting job offers…

Ive been having an awful time getting job offers since being laid off. Jumping through hoops (3-4 interviews, huge panels, long wait times, roles being re-written mid process). I’ve had enough of the bullshit.

I’m not sure if I’d even bother to take the test. Takes an hour of my time, unpaid, and it’s no guarantee I’ll get the next interview or even offer. I figure I showed up, showed my resume, explained my work history and skills, and brought proof of my projects to show. That should be enough to move onto the next steps without having me take some silly ass test.

Hiring managers and companies have us doing so much more for middle class jobs than our parents ever had to. I’m tired /antiwork… I’m really tired.
