About a month ago, I was reached out to regarding a supervisor position at a coffee and donut shop that was in the next city over (so like, a 30 minute drive each way). I went to the interview, spoke with the store manager and he had trouble finding my resume and asked what I applied for. He then started listing off positions available and said “cake decorator”. Now I've never heard of this chain and had no idea they did cakes. I do baking in my spare time so of course I took him up on that offer since, according to him, his current cake decorator was moving soon and he needed the position to be filled. I was so happy about this job and agreed to work front counter so I could familiarize myself with the store.
First day of work, boss isn't there. Employees had no idea I was hired and sat me down in the back for 2 1/2 hours. No one approached me, no one said anything. They called the boss but he never answered. They decided to send me home when they realize he wasn't working that day at all. Later I get a call and he tells me to come in a few days later. So I do, and he gives me a uniform. A dirty one. (Pictured) I refused to wear it and he got ticked at me for rejecting it. I only did training videos that day so, it's better than getting sent home for refusing to wear dirty, second hand clothing. I also confronted him about the cake decorator position since I shared that with the other employees and no one had any idea what I was talking about. Turns out they don't do cakes, at all! Nothing. So I ask him about the position I was offered during the interview and he just responds with “Well I dunno why I said that,”. I was disappointed to say the least but I kinda saw it coming.
Second day, I go into work, 7 am as usual. I caught a stomach bug but put a mask on and went in anyways. I did not have a proper uniform and was not made aware of what I had to wear so I just went in with simple jeans, brown shoes, and a sweater. Boss has a very interesting way of telling me things, like he will go over every other detail and dance in circles instead of getting to the point. So he pulls me in the back and talks about how corporate is in town and they're hammering on him over uniforms etc etc. Few paragraphs later I ask “… so you want me to go home?” And he replies with “yeah, sorry”. He told me to call him later that day to see if I should work the next day. I called and he said yes, same time as usual, 7 am – 12 pm.
Third day, it's Sunday, 5 am and I get a text from boss telling me to stay home because he isn't able to properly train me. At this rate, I'm just irritated but I accept it and enjoy my weekend anyways.
Monday, day 4, I guess. First actual day of work, he (poorly) trained me on basic coffee and donut stuff. Nothing really notable other than his sheer incompetence when it comes to instructions. He jumps topics every other sentence and slips in “Oh, I forgot;” making the day pretty stressful. He then decided it was a good idea to put me on drive through as he left work entirely. Needless to say I did not learn much nor get a lot of work done. The coworkers made it abundantly clear that I was in their way.
One week later, I ask boss for a schedule. He refuses to give me one but he wants me to start showing up at 6 am, meaning i had to be awake and moving by 5 am. No matter how I asked or how many times I asked, he refused to give me a solid schedule, coming up with excuses. The way he talks about me and corporate too almost seems like he's trying to hide me from corporate. He also clarifies that we get paid every Friday and yet, somehow, after working there for nearly a month I still haven't gotten a check. Whenever I inquire about it, he doesn't answer me and regularly avoids my phone calls and text messages.
At this rate, I'm ready to quit. I just want to get my check and leave. I get paid $11/hour but I can't keep up with a job that regularly lies to me, doesn't train me properly, and treats me like a nuisance only to cover it up with “lol sorry man!” I've had some really, really vile bosses in the past and I'll admit boss isn't mean or anything, but he's just really incompetent. The store is ridiculously dirty, everything's a safety hazard, and the employees could give less of a shit.
