Anyone have experience with employee owned businesses ?

Im in the mist of starting a business and am very interested in employee owned. . My husband also runs an appliance repair company that is looking to expand and I suggested turning it into an employee owned business. Does anyone have an input on starting an employee owned business? Benefits or drawbacks?
