For background: I recently started a part time job as a produce clerk at a local grocery store. I had 2 prior shifts in which I was told by coworkers as well as one manager in training for our department that I did not need to notify anyone when I took a break or lunch. My first day I couldn’t swipe my badge due to some sort of internal issue so one of the managers that hired me just had me use the sign-in sheet. No one ever told me to sign for my lunch, I also just did not automatically know to do that. I have not worked much and I am a college student.
Third shift: I take my lunch and my produce manager comes into the break room saying something along the lines of “we need to talk.” I go to find her and she’s with the store manager. The store manager rudely addresses me about not signing for my lunch and asks me about my badge. I explain that I misplaced my badge and one of the other managers was supposed to make me another one. (Going into work knowing I lost my badge on the third day was already traumatic for me because I can see how that could paint me as irresponsible). Store manager is like “Not signing for your lunch is time theft” etc. Then the department manager is like “You also need to notify me when you go on lunch or take a break.” I explain to her that I have been told that I did not need to and that even the manager in training had also said this. She doesn’t really acknowledge it and just says “No, you need to notify me.”
Ultimately, my shift and day were ruined. It’s not even so much about what was said but how they addressed it. I genuinely wanted to quit because as I said, it was literally my third day. The store manager had seen me in the break room on a 10 and didn’t come to me to ask any questions or clarify that I needed to notify her of anything. There’s also the issue of the hiring manager giving me one schedule and her having another. Times didn’t match up for the day so she was like “I don’t know why he gave you that—are you able to stay longer?” Of course, I say “Not really.” Why would I help you after you and the store manager were being rude and disrespectful?
TLDR: Got in trouble with the store manager and my department manager on my third shift for not being trained properly
