My SO was fired for transferring to a different branch within the same company

My SO works at a bank and wanted to transfer to a branch that was closer to where we want to live (2hrs away) she applied and is supposed to interview today. She notified her manager yesterday of the move she was planning to make (should she be awarded the transfer) just doing good diligence as an employee. The manager pretended to be very happy for her yesterday, however this morning when she went to work she was fired. Now she can’t simply transfer to a different branch within the company, since she’s no longer with the company. This seems like retaliation, but im not aware for sure. The manager did not outright state that it was because she was leaving, however she stated (paraphrasing) that “they are understaffed, and that she just got her yearly vacation, and she thinks she can just leave if she gets the job” Any…
