I work for a public institution and we reported a flea infestation at work last week. We still have not been given a timeline on fumigation and are being told to just “avoid the area” even though it's our front desk which must be stationed at all times.
We do not currently have a building manager and our supervisor is out, so there is no one present to advocate for us. I was anxious and frustrated so I emailed our facilities department with my concerns about this being a health hazard and the need to expedite to keep the fleas from multiplying.
Our regional manager found out and I got in trouble for going over their head and not “waiting on the policies we have in place” since “the ball was already rolling”, despite no updates. Now we have a carpet cleaning service coming out tonight, instead of mid-May as previously estimated, which I don't know would have happened if I didn't escalate.
Am I fucking crazy for pointing out this being an unsafe work environment? My coworkers and supervisor are downplaying it and saying they've seen worse and they don't want to risk losing their jobs by speaking up.
