I work for a small business in VA. – no health insurance or anything; very small operation.
The salary is decent though, so i take it. I've been this place for almost 2 years.
The owner is always unpredictable, unprepared, unsure. Maybe just overwhelmed, but not handling it well.
No guidance, so everyone really has to be on their game in problem solving and self-governing. Which i don't always mind.
It's filled with your typical woes, more responsibilities without more pay, brutal commute, favoritism, nepotism, the usual.
2 people do payroll; one for the hourly employees, and one for the salary.
The owner does salary payroll, which you'd think would be solid.
He has missed not one, but two paydays, resulting in simply not being paid on time.
I also recently received a raise, which did not take effect at the agreed upon date. I asked him about it and he “made a mistake and will catch me up next pay period.”
I try to be understanding, i really do. But i find it reprehensible and beyond disrespectful that he is so viciously unprepared, forgetful, overwhelmed… Whatever it may be. It's horrifying.
I'm not sure why I'm posting this, i think I'm afraid? Like this guy can't run a business and i need to look elsewhere. But at the same time it's the devil i know, and they have me by the balls.
It's very difficult to find a job that pays well, WHILE working full time.
It's just not as simple as “leave”.
I'm in my 30s with a home and bills to pay, I'm well in my career and I'm not getting any younger.
And circling back to the beginning: i live in VA. So i basically have no rights as an employee.
I want to say something to him to really just make sure this doesn't happen again or let him know that he's hurting people that are valuable to his business, for his OWN good… But he probably, undoubtedly, looks at us like expendable pawns.
