“What do you do for a living”

Why is it so common to ask people what they do for a living or what their job is? I’ve never once asked anybody that question because I don’t care nor do I want to talk about what I do for money, but it seems like that’s the first question anybody ever asks when getting to know someone. There is so much more to life than what you do for money. If you really want to get to know me, ask me about my hobbies. You’ll get more passion and info out of those answers than asking me about work. Also, asking someone “what they do for a living” is a terrible way to ask why their job is. So what do I do for a living? Well, I’m glad you asked that. I love challenging myself in the outdoors with a lot of type 2 fun, it’s where I find the most peace in life. What do I do for money? I do meaningless clicks on a computer for 8 hours and dream about 4:01pm.
