I recently took a job in which I relocated for. The position was significantly less money than I usually make, but in an area that I wanted to be in. The position was to be 32 hours a week. Four days with Sunday and Monday being mandatory. The other two days were “flexible.” Throughout the interview and hiring process I asked about scheduling. Explained that consecutive days off were my priority, and said that I would prefer tues-Thursday off.
All goes well for the first two weeks of training. Then I switch to my regular schedule and the manager decides that Tuesday is now a required day. I explained that didn’t work for me personally and that perhaps we could compromise to every other week. Manager took a hard line and “gave me the choice” of submitting to their schedule or taking off.
Sorry.. I know my worth. I’m now living in a resort town and jobs are everywhere.
Know the needs of your business, managers. Don’t tell a new hire one thing and then change your mind.
