It's time to make this question illegal in verifications of employment. I just left my job and the main reason I left was because I didn't get along with the HR lady. I left professionally, and lied through my teeth about why I was leaving because I wanted to make sure that the next job I apply to will get a “yes” answer to this question. Despite all the precaution I took to make sure that the answer would be “yes”, and despite the fact they offered me a lot to stay, I was still nervous that in the future the HR lady would answer that question as a “no”. It feels like you're being held hostage with that question. The only thing they really need to know was “did they work there during these dates”, and “did they do the job they said they did”.
