My previous employer had the unmitigated gall to ask us to come in at 5:30am on days with snow. They let us know the “volunteers” would need to arrive at 5:30 on snow days and would be expected to clear snow from all sidewalks and other walkways before the rest of the employees arrived.
I was the first to hold up my hand.
“King, are you volunteering?”
“No. I just wanted to know why we don't hire a snow removal service. It only snows about 5-10 times a year. This is a $60million a year company. The people in this group are highly trained and highly skilled at what we do. We are all certified in an extremely niche trade and are on call for life and death emergencies 24/7/365. I'm not willing to participate in the snow removal plan.”
An hour later one of the other guys came up and blamed me for his forced induction into the snow removal team. “They made me do it because you said no.”
I told him, “Correction – You were afraid to stand your ground and let them bully you into “volunteering” for the job. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Make sure my parking spot is cleared of snow before I arrive.”
