Returning Company Equipment

In March of this year (over 8 weeks ago now), I acquired a new job. Turned in my two weeks, they told me to go packing that very day. Fine. I left and was without pay for two weeks until my new job started. It all happened so fast it made my head spin. On a Monday morning I turned in notice, was told to leave, lost VPN access around 10:00 AM. That was it. The next day was Tuesday and there was a FedEx document delivered to my house with my separation information, continuation of benefits information, etc. No word from anyone just. Get out. Gone. Wednesday morning I wiped the company computer — I didn’t want to have their proprietary information in my possession nor did I want any appearance of wrongdoing. Wednesday morning I wiped the company computer — I didn’t want to have their proprietary information in my possession nor did I want any appearance of wrongdoing.

Fast forward 8 weeks and today I received an email from an admin at the company, short sweet and to the point.

“Please send back all the equipment that you may have. This includes…” and goes into list all the items I MIGHT have. The only item the company gave me was a computer. I had everything else and there list is quite extensive, even listing usb cables and the like.

From the email I can tell they have no idea what equipment I have in my possession. I looked at the computer and can’t find a single inventory control sticker or anything like that. The hard drive was wiped completely (by me) using a secure wipe program that wipes the data, then fills the drive with garbage data and wipes it again.

Now the question. Do I return the damn thing? They sent me a postage paid label but no boxes or packing supplies. Plus they have no idea what I have (as far as I can tell). Given the rude way they showed me the door I’m tempted to just ignore the email, flip them the bird, and see what happens

I’m also worried, to be honest with you, that if I do return the computer they will claim I still have other equipment that they own in my possession. Frankly. I’m done with them and want nothing more to do with the place.

Screw them and keep it or return the computer?
