I’ll keep this as brief as I can, but hoping someone thinking of working for a certain large Hobby/Craft store will read this and change their mind.
While going back to college online I decided to take a job at a craft store known for their large stores and controversial leadership. I worked in their framing shop because it was something I had done years before with another company and enjoyed seeing the interesting artwork people brought in. Unfortunately I started there shortly before Christmastime, which is their busiest time and when team leads and managers apparently become dictators.
Each department was assigned an aisle of Christmas decor that they’re responsible for and members of each department rotated cleaning and restocking the aisles.
At the end of your shift you also had to make sure your aisle was fully stocked before you were ALLOWED to leave. This is difficult enough when the items you need to stock are spread on top of tall aisles throughout the store, making it a job of hide-and-seek to get what you need to put on the shelf, but you also have to help customers and restock while people are pulling things off the shelf. When you’re done a manager has to check your aisle and decide if it’s good enough before they let you leave.
Leaving HOURS after your shift was supposed to end was normal. One night my car was being worked on and my wife was supposed to pick me up at the end of my shift. 2+ hours later she’s waiting in the parking lot, pissed and both the store and me, and I’m desperately trying to make the aisle look good enough on my own so that I can go home. After being told AGAIN that it wasn’t good enough, I finally just walked out for the night and decided that they could just chew me out the next day.
