This happened years ago but I read an article recently and it made me think of this.
I worked at a strip mall for a cellular company. The job wasn’t bad and there were a lot of good food options which I enjoyed. One of those places was called the Tilted Kilt. The Tilted Kilt is a national chain having restaurants scattered across the country. Their hook is having attractive waitresses dressed in a plaid kilt and a matching bra. Think Hooters with Irish/Scottish twist.
Anyways, this restaurant has been a part of our strip mall for almost 9 years. Their food was decent and it always seemed fairly busy when I ordered carry out for lunch. St. Patrick’s day came and Tilted Kilt went all out. I’m talking live bands, ice luges, multiple vendors, the whole nine yards. From what we were told, they went all hands that day and their employees were expected to work 12+ hours that day with some working 15+. From what I can tell the day was an overwhelming success. They had a line out the block when I showed up for my shift at 11 and it was the same when I left at 9.
The next day the opening shift arrives with changed locks and a sign on the door. It said essentially. Thanks for all your hard work but we’re closing this location effective immediately. None off of employees or even managers knew about this. There was no notice or warning that this was going to happen. I’m assuming the only one who knew was the GM.
Apparently this is legal in the restaurant industry to prevent intentional food tampering. At least that’s what I was told.
Never let any corporation try to convince you that you’re a family. Companies only care about the bottom line and their employees are just numbers on a spread sheet.
