My wife is an elementary school teacher at a school district in San Jose, California. She’s been the victim of multiple jokes between admin, staff and some parents. She also happens to be the only darker skinned person in the whole school which blows my mind for such a diverse population in the area. They definitely treat her as the token Latina. Earlier this year they told her they wouldn’t renew her contract for the next school year but would let her keep working until the end of the year and would fulfill their end of the contract (pay her) if she just kept working. They also did not involve a union rep for this talk, and got really upset when she spoke to her union rep about this. Since then, my wife has been yelled at and used as a scapegoat for issues with two particular kids who have been violent with each other since before her arrival. She noted and reported their behaviors since the first day and has 20+ emails, letters and texts where she attempted to reach out and ask for help which they always ignored. Today was her last day and when she went to the office to pick up her last paycheck (as they told her to) they laughed at her, and told her to maybe come back in a month to check again. What can we do? Is this legal?
