TLDR at the top: 8 top comes into my restaurant and is all things listed in title and gets upset that I stood up for myself. Why do people think it’s normal to treat waitstaff as cannon fodder and say things that are just not socially acceptable.
I am a 24 y.o. transwoman pre hrt but I am already out to everyone. I came back from a break at work today and immediately got sat with a group of obnoxious drunk folks. They start cracking derogatory gay jokes amongst themselves before I get the chance to greet them. As I greet them (welcome them to restaurant and introduce myself) they immediately snap at me saying I don’t match my name and call me a mans name. Ive had this happen before because someone was ill informed so I let it slide and corrected what he said. He immediately replies asking me if I had a sister as she seems like she’d be fun. I then draw a boundary saying that that’s inappropriate and some things should not be said. I go to report to my manager but before they can do anything the group leaves.
I tell you all this for an explanation as to why this is so on my mind. Why are service workers and “low level” workers treated like trash by the people who come into our restaurants and places of work and astonished when we dont just roll over? I would think common sense would tell them that we’re less likely to put up with their nonsense.
