Another stagnant field – Veterinary medicine?

While navigating our lovely broken American economy, I found myself on a good week with a few hundred dollars in the account and decided it would be best spent on a well-overdue vet visit for my two pups yearly shots (or close to it as you can get to yearly, wallet permitting). I thought I would have enough money for both dogs, but after receiving the bill for the first dog, I had to postpone the second dog's appointment. When I was fresh out of HS, one of our friends was the most impressive person I knew because she was making $15 an hour! That was 10 years ago, and from what I can tell online, that is still the case for a starting vet tech, after roughly two years of training…

Im curious if there is anyone work in the field that has a perspective to share? Is this another field dominated by corporate fat cats constantly squeezing blood out of the little man? Or is my surface-level analysis just flat-out wrong?
