I work in a grocery store, one where it says in the handbook that breaks are NOT GUARANTEED. You can ONLY get a break if the store isnt “too busy” in their eyes. But i think they don’t want you taking a break in general
The store’s AC is functional, not that they run it to the necessary temperature as it still gets hot as hell in the store, but the upstairs AC where the break room is has been nonfunctioning, with the only cooling agent being a fan. This also affects the employee bathrooms.
However, down in the store around the alcohol we have a little booth seating area, usually for customers. I choose to sit in the alcohol area, as i’m 21, for my break, as it’s nice and cool. Especially since its summer, and it’s hotter upstairs than it is outside.
Well, god fucking forbid! Woe is the store! Apparently employees sitting there for 15 minutes is the equivalent of a war crime! Its ONLY for the customers! Who are most of the time never there! So i keep getting kicked out of the area.
That leaves nowhere suitable for a break, as it’s hot outside and hotter upstairs, there’s no well regulated place, might as well just keep working!
They just spent about 10,000 dollars on a display for the produce section with new screens and everything, and then had to remodel the break room a bit so HR didnt get on them, this included painting a wall, getting a bigger tv, and new tables and chairs which are just basic. But not fixing the AC.
I’ve been here 10 months. I get paid 12.50 an hour. I only make 150 dollars each week. But god forbid they use some of that money they can’t give their workers to make my experience better
