So I’m remembering when I used to work retail, I worked at this place on the weekends whilst I was studying at university and it was a very reputable department store chain in the UK. I was excited for the discount which was 20% off to be able to afford some of the makeup and kinda made up for the absolute minimum wage which was £5-something an hour for me. Turns out after joining, the staff discount card was a fucking MasterCard?! I couldn’t even get one, and you had to purchase items off it to get a discount. Now I was 20 years old and had no credit history so I just didn’t apply for it.
Not to mention, we had targets of getting 2 customers a month EACH to sign up to this MasterCard. You really think customers are going to want to spend 30 mins at a till signing up to a credit card? Sometimes old ladies would be interested after you mentioned it to them and I hated putting it through because it’s a damn credit card with high interest rates, it just felt so damn predatory but we got the stick if those targets weren’t hit. I did leave after 3 months though, was my worst ever retail stint.
