I work in a nursing home. In the 3 years I've been here they have pulled a lot of crap.
For starters, if you call in they force you to “make it up” on your off days. And to top it off, if you're sick and they mandate you to be off for X amount of days, you're also forced to make up the days they told you that you can't come in because you were sick. So for the full timers, who are already working 40 hours a week, and have kids and lives outside of work, it's nearly impossible. You work 40 hours a week then you miss 5 days because of being sick so then they force you to make up those 5 days on top of your regular shifts. A lot of my coworkers are students. They can't manage their studies while following this policy. A lot of people quit after only a few months because it's so ridiculous.
I found out my grandfather had passed unexpectedly while I was driving to work 4 months ago. I called them and told them that a loved one had died and I need the day off. Nope. They threatened to fire me if I didn't come in.
Today I tried calling in because I have a UTI. I need to go to a doctor and get antibiotics, I need rest. I feel crummy and HR calls and says if I don't come in they'll fire me. So now I have to risk kidney infection for my job. I am so tired of the bullying, the insane workload they put on me. I hurt my back on the job to the point where at 22 I now have chronic back pain for the foreseeable future. Work did nothing to accommodate me, they tried giving me restrictions but apparently there's a limit on how long you can be on restrictions so when that ran out they put me back on full duty while still having severe pain doing my job. They threatened to fire me if I didn't comply. After 3 years I'm finally putting an end to their bullying and manipulation and putting my 2 weeks in as I search for a better job. People shouldn't have to deal with this kind of environment.
