So this happened years ago when I was in culinary school. I was working in the kitchen at an upscale boutique hotel in Newport, Rhode Island. I'm not going to name it since this happened too long ago and this is sadly not a abnormal situation in the restaurant industry.
I interview with the chef there and he likes my resume so I am brought on to be a rounds cook (someone who can work any station in the kitchen depending on the needs that day/minute). He schedules me to start training on garde manger (salads, cold apps, desserts) which is lowest rank in the kitchen for cooks with the intent to train me on the rest of the stations after that. Two days later the chef that hired me gets fired and replaced with a tyrant of a chef. Old school guy who thinks screaming is an acceptable form of communication. He would assign me a task then an hour later come and throw away everything I had worked on and refused to train me on other stations like was the original plan.
Its a Friday and I have decided I had enough. I was scheduled at 4 and when I don't show I get a text to which I respond saying “running late”. Half hour goes by I get a phone call. “Finding parking I'll be there soon!” Another 15 minutes later and I say “walking in now”. 5 o'clock comes around and now panic has set in that he in down a garde manger cook at 5 pm on a Friday.
I pride myself on getting to work early, being reliable, and having my station locked down and ready to go but that guy was a piece of work and deserved every bit of that. I kicked my feet up with a beer and played CoD for the rest of the night with the biggest smile on my face.
