Started working at a gas station last March and it feels like I’ve been there forever. By May I worked 8 hour evening shifts by myself with no breaks. On several occasions I would have to stay a half hour late because the only overnight guy was an alcoholic who had to walk to work and on the nights he slept passed his alarm I stayed 1:30 after I was supposed to leave. He was eventually fired for passing out drunk while working so I hoped that would be the end of staying past I’m due to leave…didn’t.
New overnighted was nice enough but by then our store lost most of its veteran staff, all assistant managers, and even it’s manager. We only had 5 people working there over the summer.
As time went on the overnighter’s life kinda went nuts and they would often come late or not call off until 15 min before there shift, thus resulting in me staying at-least an hour until “upper management” found someone to drag in for an overnight shift. After a couple of months of this I started Uni again and complained. They finally fixed the doors so I could lock them, but threw a fit about how often I had to do it. We eventually got a “manager” except their attention was quickly directed towards another store(I suspect he got sick of the constant crap).
By November I’m still having to wait an hour to see if I can lock the doors but we finally got some assistant managers. “Alex” was promptly given all the tasks “Murphy” the manager didn’t bother to complete, without any training. “Rose” was thrown under the bus and made to cover almost all absent shifts including overnights. As time went on rose shared with me her feelings for Murphy but how she felt he was using her feelings to get her to cover shifts and do what he needed done.
By January I had still constantly closed the store because the overnight person called off, but they were soon fired. New overnight person was reliable enough at first they too came in a half to a full hour late.
February I put my foot down and switched to morning and mid-evening shifts so I didn’t have to rely on the overnight person to show up so I could leave.
We now have quiet a few new hires but none of them are really trained. The managers don’t communicate with each other, especially over the schedule. So none of the new people know who to talk to to call off, so the store is covered. I am not a fucking manager of any kind and I’m still having to worry if someone isn’t gonna show up or if someone switched. And this is a daily reoccurrence. The new guys have even tried coming to me to figure out thing the managers need to take care of.
