Friend facing termination or option to quit, no documentation. What are our options?

Writing on behalf of a friend. Employed for six months. Was aware from own self-evaluations that they were struggling with the job. Went to boss this week to ask for a PIP or mentorship to get the job back on track. They have met every week since the job started and the boss was enthusiastic about his work. The boss said instead of a PIP he had one week to decide whether to quit or be fired. It is not my understanding that any catastrophic mistakes were made. Friend never had a performance evaluation. None of this is in writing. What are his rights or options? We live in a right to work state.
