I work for a non-profit, which means I work with a bunch of college educated rich white women who haven't felt the sting of inflation in the same way that our clients do, or that I do as a poor white woman.
I do not enjoy the work culture. But, there are PTO days and I can work from home sometimes, and it's just the best thing I'm going to find. ATM. I also appreciate that my boss wants me to feel seen and heard… As long as it doesn't take any extra effort on their part.
Before I started my position was full time and they cut it down to part-time before I was hired. Every time I bring up adding more hours so that I can actually complete my work, they want to talk about my organization skills or my ability to multitask. Side note, I have adhd. I can get more done in 8 hours than most people can in three days, and I take stimulant medication to help focus all of that energy. My counselor and I have been over and over the numbers and it's just not enough time.
At our last meeting about the subject, I explained that while I understood the job was part-time when I took it, I believe there needs to be more time. I also explained that when I took this job it was enough money, and since then I have to make about $400 more each month through a side job to pay my bills, so I can no longer continue to work unpaid hours because I don't have time my schedule.
As soon as they heard this, I became another poor person to help. They might not be able to do anything, but they're actually going to try after all this time. It only took losing my dignity and having to beg for something that was owed to me, something I am qualified to ask for. So now I will do exactly the minimum for exactly the amount of hours I am paid for, and if they don't like it they can fire me and find someone else to do this job for $1,500 a month. PS my rent is about $700 a month
