Ok so I’m a casual worker in hospitality in Australia, and today, I got fired for a situation that I’m pretty sure wasn’t my fault at all.
This week, I was told by my manager that I was working 5-11 on Wednesday and Thursday. This was on the roster for at least a week beforehand. I was working with my manager last Sunday, and he says to me ‘So you’re ok to work Monday and Tuesday?’ I was very confused by this, and after a bit, I realised he’d changed the roster in the last couple of days without notifying me at all. I can’t remember the exact outcome of the following conversation, but I think what was decided upon was that I would work Monday and Tuesday, and he would work Wednesday and Thursday. He seems to think it’s the other way around, but I remember asking the main boss, who was also working on Monday what time he wants me to come in on Monday after having the conversation with my manager.
Monday wasn’t busy enough for me to be needed, so I didn’t end up going to work, but the boss said he’d call me if it got busy at any point. I get told by the boss to come in at 3 PM on Tuesday, and as I’m about to leave, I get a notification saying I’m now working 10-9 on Wednesday and 10-6 on Thursday. No communication from the manager that this was going to happen. I texted him at 2 PM on Tuesday, telling him that I had made plans for Wednesday morning and Thursday as I thought I wasn't working those days and could come in on Wednesday afternoon, but not Thursday. He didn't see my text until earlier today (Wednesday) and is blaming the situation on me, saying that we definitely decided I was working Wednesday and Thursday.
The big boss, who I should probably mention is also my dad, texted me this morning asking why I didn't call him and sort it out, which I would've done but my phone is weird and can't make phone calls (He has been told this multiple times), and then proceeded to tell me that this whole situation is my fault for not getting my phone fixed prior. I told him that obviously I couldn't predict this situation and he replied 'You can work it out with your new job, we don't need a sarcastic smartass.'
I'm pretty annoyed at the whole situation because I felt pretty powerless to change anything that happened, yet I'm still being blamed for the outcome. Is there anything I could point out to try and make him see reason? Or did I actually screw up somewhere along the line?
