job i applied to reached out and said they got negative feedback about me from their client…is this even legal

Title says it all. Applied to a dream role. 2 rounds of interviews went great with employer and client. They were looking to place me on a project with a client. Today they call and say the client reportedly got bad feedback about me from a specific former employer and isn't interested in moving forward. Didnt say anything else. I said, well i think there must be a mistake, im happy to provide some references from that employer and im certain this is a misunderstanding. No follow-up yet. WTF I had a great rapport with the 3 people I solely interacted with/reported to. Im fairly confident it didn't come from any of them. Just blown away right now. If somebody wants a reference, I'm happy to provide, but i was never asked; they went some back assward channel and im honestly feeling like its a case of mistaken identity. It…

It should be illegal to contact someones former employer without their permission.

Do i have any recourse
